English B – Welcome

Welcome to English B!

One of the goals this year is to develop your skills in being a reflective learner. The school year starts with us thinking about ourselves as learners.

  • The first one is the one we started in our first class:  Answering questions  in your learning journey.  While these questions do help me to get to know you better, they also can get you thinking about your experiences learning.  If you missed all the questions in the class today, here they are: Welcome Questions.  Remember that this is an English class, so the expectation is that your answers are thoughtful, developed and well-written.

  • VARK – this is an acronym which stands for Visual, Aural, Reading/Writing and Kinesthetic.  These are four ways we learn.  You are going to do an online questionnaire to discover what your learning style is.  What follows is the information needed to complete the questionnaire. VARK

Other items you need to do before your first class next week:

  1. Bring a binder (you can use it for other subjects) with paper in it!
  2. Re-read the article “Smart and Smarter”.  You may want to show it to your parents.
  3. From the textbook centre you will need Writers Inc, and The House on Mango Street.  Please bring these for Wednesday’s class.
  4. Read the course handout given to you at the end of class.  You need to show this to your parents as they need to sign it!
  5. Decide on a novel you want to read during our reading time.  We will go to the library on Monday, but if you already know the book you want to read, bring it to class.
